Solar Return Case Studies: From Chart Calculation to an Annual Story
6 min read
Learning objectives
- ✦Apply a five-step integrated solar return reading process
- ✦Integrate the return Ascendant, return houses, stelliums, angle contacts, chart aspects, and counterexamples
- ✦Express annual themes that can be tested and responded to rather than event predictions
Return charts contain many symbols; the challenge is selecting priorities and retaining counterexamples. You have learned calculation, three-chart roles, Ascendant and houses, and aspect overlays. Combine them into a repeatable process.
Five-step integrated reading
| Step | Action | Output |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Read the return Ascendant sign | Annual tone |
| 2 | Locate the return Sun and planets in the return chart’s houses; find stelliums | Main stage and energy focus |
| 3 | Scan planets close to the return chart’s angles | Main actors |
| 4 | Filter other tight aspects within the return chart | Theme’s texture |
| 5 | Track transit triggers | Time windows |
Remember: broad to specific, stage before plot. All five steps use the return chart’s own houses and aspects. If birth time is substantially uncertain, downgrade the return Ascendant, houses, and angles, prioritizing other planetary signs and tight aspects within the chart. After the five steps, use the closing “Overlaying the Natal Chart” section to compare the results with natal structure. The return Sun’s sign and degree stay fixed each year, but its house in the return chart changes.
Both are fictional teaching cases reproducible with an ephemeris. They use actual return location, Placidus, and a three-degree initial filter, with degrees rounded to minutes. These are not the only settings. astro.how uses birthplace; recreating case two there changes its return Ascendant.
Case one: bringing ideas onto a professional stage
Xiaolan, age 34. Recreate the return chart from the data before uncovering the sample reading:
| Layer | Known data |
|---|---|
| Birth | 1992-08-17 05:51:51 (UTC+8), Taipei, 25°02′N, 121°34′E |
| 2026 return | 2026-08-17 11:00:00 (UTC+8), Taipei; return Sun = natal Sun at 24°15′ Leo |
| Natal structure | Ascendant 28°36′ Leo; Sun 24°15′ Leo and Mercury 6°50′ Leo in the 12th; Mars 13°59′ Gemini in the 10th |
| Return Ascendant | 7°43′ Scorpio; return Midheaven 9°38′ Leo |
| Return planetary houses | Return Sun 24°15′ Leo, Mercury 13°20′ Leo, and Jupiter 10°31′ Leo all in the return chart’s 10th house |
| Close contacts | Return Jupiter conjunct return Midheaven, orb 0°52′; return Mercury conjunct return Jupiter, orb 2°49′ |
| Transit window | Around 2026-10-10, transiting Mars conjunct natal Mercury |
The Ascendant in Scorpio gives this year a focused, probing way of showing up. The return Sun, Mercury, and Jupiter gather in the 10th house, and Jupiter sits close to the return Midheaven. These layers point to a professional stage and public expression; thinking, writing, or teaching may become more visible.
A provisional theme: Bring ideas onto a professional stage this year, while checking commitments and timing. The Mars trigger is an observation window, not a publication date. Compare time, costs, and workload before accepting a talk, writing project, or new role.
Overlaying the natal chart: The return Ascendant falls in the natal 3rd house; return Mercury and Jupiter fall in the natal 12th (the return Sun always falls there in the overlay); return Jupiter conjuncts natal Mercury (orb 3°41′). The overlay shows private thinking and writing in the natal chart being activated this year. Together, the standalone chart shows the stage, while the overlay shows which natal area is brought onto it. The theme can be refined to: “Bring ideas long developed behind the scenes onto a public stage.”
Use the five steps to read a sample return yourself:
Case two: a year of inner grounding
Bohan, age 28. Recreate with the same settings:
| Layer | Known data |
|---|---|
| Birth | 1998-03-13 09:00:40 (UTC+8), Hong Kong, 22°19′N, 114°10′E |
| 2026 return | 2026-03-13 00:00:00 (UTC+4), Muscat, 23°35′N, 58°23′E; return Sun = natal Sun at 22°15′ Pisces |
| Natal structure | Ascendant 8°08′ Taurus; Sun in the 11th; Mercury 8°14′ Aries in the 12th; Pluto 8°04′ Sagittarius in the 8th |
| Return Ascendant | 10°19′ Sagittarius; return Moon 7°57′ Capricorn in the 1st house |
| Return planetary houses | Return Sun 22°15′ Pisces, Venus 7°56′ Aries, Saturn 3°10′ Aries, and Neptune 1°29′ Aries all in the return chart’s 4th house |
| Close contacts | Return Moon square return Venus, orb 0°01′; return Mercury 11°46′ Pisces (retrograde) square return Ascendant, orb 1°26′ |
| Transit window | Around 2026-03-31, transiting Mars conjunct natal Sun (also the return Sun) |
This case uses actual location, Muscat. Switching the same moment to birthplace Hong Kong leaves the Sun’s degree unchanged but moves the return Ascendant from Sagittarius to Aquarius and rearranges all the houses; the 4th-house stellium may scatter across other houses. This is why stating the method comes first:
- Local time
- 04:00
- Sun
- Below horizon
- Ascendant (ASC)
- Aquarius 4°
- Midheaven (MC)
- Scorpio 17°
- Sun
- Pisces 22°
With Sagittarius rising and the return Moon in the 1st house, emotional needs are prominent this year. Four return planets, including the Sun, gather in the 4th house, pointing to home, living arrangements, family, and inner foundations. The exact square between the return Moon and return Venus suggests possible tension between emotional security and needs for intimacy, enjoyment, or financial values.
A responsible theme: Pay attention to home and inner stability, as well as the needs of family and intimate relationships, making room for caring for yourself as well as others. Use the Mars trigger to record whether themes intensify, rather than deciding to move, quit work, or alter shared finances. Those decisions require reviewing leases, budgets, agreement, and professional advice.
Overlaying the natal chart: The return Ascendant falls in the natal 8th and conjuncts natal Pluto (orb 2°15′); return Venus, Saturn, and Neptune all fall in the natal 12th; return Venus conjuncts natal Mercury (0°18′), and return Moon squares natal Mercury (0°17′). This adds a natal layer of shared resources and boundaries, rest and endings, and activated expression. The standalone chart’s “home and roots” theme plus the overlay’s “rest and boundaries” can add a line about making space at home for rest and reflection.
What the two cases share
- Signal voting: Repeated themes across layers increase attention weight, but are not statistically independent evidence.
- Read the standalone chart first, then compare the overlay: First identify the theme from the return chart, then overlay it on the natal chart to see which personal structures it touches. Keep the two house systems distinct.
- Theme plus timing: Returns organize annual focus; transit timelines provide observation windows. Neither guarantees events.
- Seek counterexamples: Record matches, mismatches, and counterexamples so the reading can change rather than chase retrospective hits.
The last step of an annual map
A reading ends with a statement you can respond to, test, and revise, rather than a string of symbols. Major decisions about health, finance, work, relationships, or relocation still require verified information, qualified advice, and review dates, rather than an annual chart.
You can now turn an annual chart into a testable story. Return to natal charts and transits to compare annual themes with longer life cycles.
