Transit Chart Basics: Today's Sky and Your Natal Chart

5 min read

Learning objectives

  • ✦Define a transit chart as current planetary positions overlaid on a natal chart
  • ✦Distinguish the timescales and roles of fast and slow planetary transits
  • ✦Understand that transits describe an energetic climate and timing tendencies rather than predict events

“Why does the same effort sometimes go so far, yet meet obstacles at every turn at other times?” If you have wondered about life’s timing, a transit chart is astrology’s tool for exploring that question.

You have learned about natal aspects and the twelve houses: a sky map frozen at your birth. This course adds one final dimension: time. The sky has kept moving since you were born. Transits overlay today’s sky on that fixed map.

What transits are: overlaying two charts

A transit is simply the relationship between current planetary positions and your natal chart. Your natal chart never changes: its Sun stays at your birth sign and degree. The planets overhead move every day. When a transiting planet reaches a position that aspects a natal planet, that natal position is “lit up.”

For example, your natal Venus in Taurus is at 15 degrees. When transiting Jupiter approaches 15 degrees Taurus and forms a conjunction, relationships, money, or self-worth may be amplified. Resources might grow, but so might expectations or spending. This is no guarantee of results; it is a way of comparing your chart with a celestial clock. Use an ephemeris or chart tool to find planetary positions.

Transits do not rewrite who you are. They highlight a natal thread now. One person experiences Jupiter conjunct Venus as abundance, another as bills. The position is triggered; you still write the story.

The following practices use biwheels: the inner ring is the natal chart, and the outer ring is the transit sky for a particular moment. Start with the lesson’s example:

The inner ring is Chen Yutong's natal chart and the outer ring shows transits. Jupiter is conjunct her natal Venus. Which themes does this highlight, and what different forms might they take?

The biwheel: you inside, today outside

In practice, transits appear on a biwheel: the inner ring holds your fixed natal chart, and the outer ring holds current planetary positions. Read what the outer planets do in relation to the inner chart: which aspects they form to natal planets and which natal houses they cross.

This is a transit biwheel. Identify the rings, then read outer-ring planets in the inner ring's houses.
1. What does the inner ring show?
2. Which inner-ring house contains transiting Jupiter?
3. Should you read the transit chart's own outer-ring houses?

A common beginner’s confusion is thinking a transit chart means you have changed. Instead, the surrounding weather has changed. Your natal chart is the photographic negative; transits are the light falling on it. The light moves and changes color, while the negative remains yours.

Another distinction: transits are neither synastry nor a solar return chart. The outer ring is the current sky; the inner ring is your birth sky. Keep these charts distinct so weather, yearly themes, and lifelong structure do not become mixed together.

Fast and slow planets: weather and climate

Planets move at very different speeds (see planetary speeds for the astronomy), shaping the scale of their transits:

Planet One circuit Transit role
Moon About 27 days Daily emotional rhythm and background tone
Sun, Mercury, Venus About one year Monthly short-term themes and triggers
Mars About two years Changes in drive over weeks to months
Jupiter About 12 years Expansion opportunities on a yearly scale
Saturn About 29.5 years Life lessons and structural adjustments over years
Uranus, Neptune, Pluto 84 to 248 years Deep changes spanning chapters of life

Move through all of 2027 to explore the table: the Sun completes a circuit and Venus travels a little farther. Mars turns retrograde that year and covers only a little over a third of a circuit. Jupiter changes signs, while Uranus barely moves:

A practical starting point: the slower the motion, the longer the window usually lasts. Lunar transits turn pages quickly and cannot support major predictions alone; close Pluto aspects can last years. Weight depends on more than speed: compare exactness, the personal points and angles involved, and overlapping transits. Slow planets commonly establish context; fast planets add short-term triggers and timing.

Three reading steps for beginners

Do not start a biwheel with the scariest aspect. Follow this sequence to avoid getting lost in noise:

  1. List slow-planet contacts first: find close aspects from Jupiter, Saturn, and the outer planets. Compare orbs, contacts to the Sun, Moon, or angles, and whether several transits point toward one theme.
  2. Read the aspects and placements: conjunctions, squares, and oppositions are often more conspicuous, though trines and sextiles can matter too. The natal planet supplies the function; the house supplies the life area.
  3. Add fast planets last: the Moon, Mercury, Venus, and Mars suggest days when themes feel especially noticeable. They do not overturn the slow-planet context.

For example, Saturn is transiting your tenth house, a period of career structure, and tomorrow the Moon squares your natal Sun. A reasonable reading is that career responsibilities have been heavier for several years, and tomorrow you may feel especially tired or eager to prove yourself. Predicting career destruction tomorrow is unreasonable. Read the season before today’s breeze.

Practice interpretation

Houses and angles depend on birth time. If it is uncertain, prioritize transits to natal planets and use houses and angles cautiously. Do not force the time to fit events.

Transits forecast a climate, not a verdict on fate

Remember the course’s central idea: transits describe an energetic climate and timing tendencies; they do not predict specific events.

An 80% chance of rain tomorrow does not guarantee you will get wet: whether to carry an umbrella or go outside remains your choice. Likewise, Saturn can highlight responsibilities and limits, while how you respond remains yours. Treat transits as prompts about which lessons deserve attention and when, rather than verdicts about what must happen.

For health, finances, and major life decisions, transits can offer reflection but cannot replace physicians, financial advisers, or other professional guidance.

With the sky-over-natal idea established, when does a transit aspect begin and end? Next we explore transit aspects, applying, and separating.
