✦Describe the qualities of masculine positive and feminine negative signs
✦List signs of each polarity and recognize their correspondence with elements
✦Use polarity to assess the chart's overall inward or outward orientation
After signs, planets, and houses, we step back to the simplest sign classification: two polarities, masculine and feminine, also called positive and negative. This division quickly reveals a sign’s basic direction of energy.
First, an essential clarification: these terms describe energy direction. They do not refer to biological sex or rank one group above another.
Masculine and feminine: outward and inward
Polarity divides the twelve signs in half according to whether energy expands outward or gathers inward.
Masculine, or positive: outward energy. Active, outgoing, expressive, and action-oriented. These signs tend to try, speak, and engage first, projecting energy into the world like someone lighting a fire.
Feminine, or negative: inward energy. Receptive, reflective, absorbing, and incubating. These signs tend to take things in, feel, and let experience settle, gathering energy inward like someone receiving and nurturing.
Reception is valuable. Healthy relationships and a balanced person need both initiative and receptivity. Constant output without absorption exhausts; constant reception without expression becomes stuck. The two directions complement each other.
Which signs belong to each polarity?
Starting with Aries, the signs alternate masculine, feminine, masculine, feminine:
Polarity
Signs
Direction
Masculine, positive
Aries, Gemini, Leo, Libra, Sagittarius, Aquarius
Outward, active, expressive
Feminine, negative
Taurus, Cancer, Virgo, Scorpio, Capricorn, Pisces
Inward, receptive, incubating
An easier memory aid is the exact correspondence with the four elements:
Fire + air = masculine. Fire’s action in Aries, Leo, and Sagittarius and air’s expression in Gemini, Libra, and Aquarius both move outward.
Earth + water = feminine. Earth’s groundedness in Taurus, Virgo, and Capricorn and water’s feeling in Cancer, Scorpio, and Pisces both gather inward.
Remembering fire and air as outward, earth and water as inward lets you identify any sign’s polarity quickly. See four elements for more detail.
Using polarity across the whole chart
Polarity is especially useful for assessing the chart’s overall direction of energy.
Count how many of the ten planets occupy masculine and feminine signs. You can later add the Ascendant. The proportions offer a quick picture of the person’s overall expressiveness or reserve.
Clearly more masculine placements: active, outward, and proactive, with possible impatience or insufficient reflection.
Clearly more feminine placements: reflective, sensitive, and receptive, with possible hesitation about taking initiative or expressing a position.
Roughly balanced: access to both initiative and reception, with possible swings between them.

Count the polarity balance

Count the ten planets in masculine fire and air signs and feminine earth and water signs. What overall snapshot does this proportion offer?
Avoid conclusions from the Sun alone. An Aries Sun with most other planets in feminine signs can describe a reserved person with one more expressive solar dimension. Count the overall proportions for the fuller picture.

The Sun is in masculine Aries, while most other planets occupy feminine signs. Count the proportions and describe the difference between the solar presentation and overall orientation.
Polarity is a broad measure for orientation. Treat it as a tool rather than a personal label.
“Many feminine placements mean I must always be passive” misuses that tool. Polarity describes the pattern that feels more natural and takes less effort. Inward-oriented people can learn initiative, and outward-oriented people can practice listening and reflection. Growth often comes from consciously developing the less familiar polarity.

This chart has five planets in each polarity. What strengths and possible swings could follow? Read the Sun, Moon, and Ascendant's polarities to distinguish outward and inward patterns.
The next two lessons refine this broad division: modalities describe how signs initiate and sustain energy, while elements describe its quality. Together, the three systems add depth to each sign.
