Planets in the Other Person's Houses: Your Role in Their Life

Learning objectives
✦Explain house overlays and cross-chart aspects as complementary perspectives
✦Interpret the relationship role suggested by a planet in a particular house
✦Distinguish the life areas of the 1st, 5th, 7th, 8th, and 10th houses in synastry
You can now measure angles between planets in two charts. But aspects alone miss another question: where does the other person stand in your life? House overlays add that dimension.
Aspects describe how energy flows; overlays describe the life area receiving it. Their Venus in your 5th house may inspire romance and play, while the same Venus in your 10th house may encourage career development. The energy is similar, but its focus differs.
How to make a house overlay
Place the other person’s planets in your natal houses and identify the house each occupies. Direction matters: do this twice.
First examine their planets in your houses, then yours in theirs. The first describes their role in your life; the second describes yours in theirs. Unequal relationships may reflect this difference: you experience them through your 7th house as a partner, while they experience you through their 11th as a friend.
In astro.how synastry, the inner wheel is the main chart and the outer wheel the other person. Read outer planets in inner houses; the outer chart’s own houses are not used. Swap the two people and generate another chart to read the reverse direction.
The other person's Moon in Chen Yutong's 4th house: outer-wheel points are read in inner-wheel houses, activating her sense of home and belongingFictional example · 1992-09-12 22:30 · Taipei / 1985-01-10 22:55 · Taipei
Chen Yutong is on the inner wheel. Locate the other person's Sun in her houses, then consider how to read the reverse direction.
One easily missed detail is the house system. Use the same system for both calculations; otherwise placements near boundaries can change houses and distort the comparison.
Which planetary placements deserve priority?
Placements are not equally important. Start with the planets most directly involved in relating:
Sun: illuminates and energizes that life area, helping you feel more visible there.
Moon: brings emotional security and belonging in that area.
Venus: brings pleasure, affection, and harmony; especially important in romantic overlays.
Mars: stimulates initiative, but may also bring friction and competition.
Saturn: brings weight and responsibility, sometimes pressure, alongside a bond for sustained effort.
Jupiter and outer-planet placements tend to supply broader, more diffuse background color. Beginners can consider them later.
Key houses in synastry
Several of the twelve houses are especially common in relationship readings. Learn these first, then extend the same logic:
House
Life area
What the person may represent
1st
Self, presentation
Immediate familiarity and a direct influence on self-expression
5th
Romance, play, creativity
Someone who inspires romance, enjoyment, and creativity
7th
Partnership, one-to-one bonds
Someone instinctively seen as a potential partner
8th
Intimacy, shared resources, depth
Deep bonds, shared finances, and physical or emotional merging
10th
Career, status, goals
Someone influencing career direction and public image
Compare the 7th and 8th houses: the 7th describes publicly acknowledged partnership, while the 8th describes private, profound, sometimes taboo bonds. Intense relationships that are hard to acknowledge publicly often emphasize the 8th rather than the 7th.
Outer Sun and Venus both fall in the inner person's 8th house. How might the inner person experience this relationship? How does it differ from a 7th-house overlay?
House overlays locate an aspect’s influence rather than replacing it. Especially informative is a planet that both forms a tight aspect to the other person’s planet and occupies a key house: strong energy with a concentrated focus is usually noticeable.
For example, their Venus trine your Mars suggests attraction, while that Venus in your 5th house focuses it on romance and play. The energy and life area align. A lovely overlay without aspect support may feel much less prominent.
Remember the whole-chart principle: even a beautiful placement is one detail in the relationship map.
Placements are tendencies, not verdicts
Overlays describe where energy tends to flow, not events that have already happened. Their Venus in your 7th means you may tend to see a partner in them, not that you must become partners. You can consciously choose friendship.
The map shows where water flows easily; whether to build channels or dams remains your decision. Use houses for awareness rather than judgment.
