Mercury and Venus Returns
16 min read
Learning objectives
- ✦Explain why Mercury and Venus return roughly once a year, usually near the season of the Sun's return, and how retrograde motion can produce three returns or a longer interval
- ✦When retrograde motion creates multiple returns, distinguish between reading each chart as it becomes active and treating all of them as one chapter; name your method and use it consistently
- ✦Use each return planet's house, the return Ascendant, direct or retrograde motion, and contacts from faster planets to explore Mercury themes of thought and communication and Venus themes of relationships and values, then compare Venus's eight-year cycle and place both returns under the solar return
In Lunar Returns and the Monthly Emotional Cycle, you connected roughly thirteen monthly charts into an emotional timeline and practiced writing down an expectation before comparing it with what happened afterward. The Moon returns home every 27.3 days, almost like clockwork.
Mercury and Venus are less punctual. They usually return to their natal positions about once a year, but sometimes pass three times in a few weeks, while at other times more than a year goes by between returns. This lesson answers four questions: Why do these returns cluster around your birthday? How does retrograde motion make their timing irregular? Which chart should you use when there are multiple returns? And how do you read Mercury and Venus returns?
Why They Cluster Near Your Birthday: Two Planets That Stay Close to the Sun
As you learned in Planetary Speeds, Mercury and Venus orbit inside Earth’s orbit. From Earth, Mercury stays within about 28 degrees of the Sun and Venus within about 47 degrees. They travel along the zodiac with the Sun, averaging about one orbit a year. So Mercury and Venus returns happen roughly once a year, on a similar timescale to the solar return. The moment a planet exactly returns to its natal longitude, you cast a full chart for the birthplace. This is a Mercury Return or Venus Return chart.
Their closeness to the Sun also determines the season in which a return can happen. For Mercury to return to its natal degree, the Sun must be nearby. Since the Sun reaches that degree around the same time each year, Mercury returns can only fall within a limited set of months. The same is true of Venus:
Chen Yutong was born on September 12, with natal Mercury in Virgo at 17°45′ and natal Venus in Libra at 14°38′. These are her return times from 2026 to 2045, calculated from an ephemeris and given in Taipei local dates:
| Return | Date range | Sun’s position at the return |
|---|---|---|
| Mercury return | August 12–September 27 | 20°24′ Leo to 5°00′ Libra |
| Venus return | August 22–November 21 | 28°57′ Leo to 28°38′ Scorpio |
This creates two differences from lunar returns:
- The return Sun is not the main variable. It stays within about 28 degrees of return Mercury and 47 degrees of return Venus. In return charts, the Sun and returning planet usually occupy the same house or houses only one or two apart. Their signals therefore overlap, unlike in lunar returns, where the Sun and Moon each play a distinct role.
- These returns often cluster around the solar return. In 2026, Chen has a Venus return on August 22, a Mercury return on September 4, and a solar return on September 13. All three charts occur within three weeks.
Retrograde Motion Makes the Cycle Irregular: One Return, Three Returns, or an Interval Longer Than a Year
“About once a year” is an average. Mercury turns retrograde three or four times each year, while Venus does so about every 19 months. If a retrograde loop crosses the natal degree, the planet passes it three times within a few weeks, creating three returns. Chen’s Mercury returns from 2026 to 2030 are:
| Year | Mercury return (Taipei date) | Return Mercury |
|---|---|---|
| 2026 | September 4 | Direct |
| 2027 | August 27 | Direct |
| 2028 | August 19 | Direct |
| 2029 | August 13, September 23, September 27 | Direct, retrograde, direct |
| 2030 | September 24 | Direct |
In 2029, Mercury passes Chen’s natal Mercury direct on August 13, stations retrograde at 1°49′ Libra on September 2, then moves back to 17°45′ Virgo on September 23. It stations again at 17°26′ Virgo on September 25 and passes the degree direct once more on September 27. The three returns fit into six weeks, with only four days between the last two. Mercury’s position relative to the Sun also differs at each pass: in August it is about 27 degrees east of the Sun, an evening star visible after sunset; the September passes are about 13–17 degrees west of the Sun, making Mercury a morning star visible before sunrise. Traditional astrology sometimes reads an evening star as more outward-facing and a morning star as more inward-facing. Treat this as an observation, not a conclusion. From 1993 to 2045, the interval between Chen’s neighboring Mercury returns ranges from less than four days to about 407 days. She has three returns in a year in 2003, 2010, 2016, 2023, 2029, and 2036, about once every six or seven years.
Retrograde motion can also stretch the wait for the next return. After Venus returns to Chen’s natal position on August 22, 2026, it stations retrograde at 8°29′ Scorpio on October 3, then stations direct at 22°51′ Libra on November 14, more than eight degrees short of natal Venus. It does not return again during that loop. The next Venus return is September 26, 2027, about 13 months later. The previous return, on October 25, 2025, was only about 10 months before the August 2026 one. From 1993 to 2045, Chen has just one Venus return each time, with intervals from 292 to 410 days. If natal Venus falls inside a retrograde loop, that cycle can produce three returns, just like Mercury.
The three tabs below use real ephemeris data; the vertical line marks the natal degree. Drag the timeline to see how many times the planet crosses it:

- Mercury in 2027: It moves direct and crosses once.
- Mercury in 2029: It completes a loop (direct, retrograde, then direct) and crosses three times.
- Venus in 2026–27: Its retrograde loop stops short of natal Venus, so the next return is delayed until the following fall.
Which Chart to Use When There Are Multiple Returns
Three returns mean three charts. Return Mercury is at 17°45′ Virgo in each, but the return Ascendant, Moon, and other planets differ because the charts are cast at different times. There are two common approaches:
| Approach | How it works | Chen in 2029 |
|---|---|---|
| Each chart takes effect in turn | Each chart remains active until the next return | The August 13 chart lasts about six weeks, the September 23 chart lasts four days, and the September 27 chart stays active until September 24, 2030 |
| Treat the passes as one chapter | The first pass introduces the topic, the retrograde pass revisits it, and the final pass settles it; the theme carries through the year | August 13 introduces it, September 23 revisits it, and September 27 settles it |
Some astrologers use only the first return and treat the later ones as an extension of the same chart. astro.how’s return charts use the most recent return active on the selected return date, which follows the first approach. You can combine the two approaches: read each chart as it becomes active, then interpret all three as one chapter.
- Mark the full window first. From August 13 to September 27, 2029, Mercury repeatedly crosses natal Mercury. Thought and communication themes are being activated throughout these six weeks, so observe the period as a whole rather than as three separate years.
- The final chart stays active longest. The September 27 chart remains in effect until the next return. Read the year’s main Mercury themes from it; treat the first two charts as a prologue and a revision, since each lasts only weeks or days.
- A retrograde chart is not an omen. A retrograde return can point to reviewing, revising, or reopening an old topic, in keeping with the approach to Mercury Retrograde. It does not mean communication will go badly this year, nor can it tell you whether to sign a contract.
- Name your method and stick with it. As with house systems, consistency makes comparisons with previous years meaningful.
Returns near a station are especially sensitive to birth time. In 2029, Mercury stations at 17°26′ Virgo, only 19′ from Chen’s natal Mercury, and stays within one degree from September 21 to 28. Around the station it moves only a few minutes of arc each day. A small difference in natal Mercury can shift the second and third return times by several hours or more. At Chen’s birth, Mercury moved about 1.9 degrees per day; if she had been born more than four hours earlier, natal Mercury would fall before 17°26′ and this sequence would have only one return. If the birth time is uncertain, be cautious about conclusions involving the Ascendant and houses in charts near a station.
Reading a Mercury Return: How You Think and Communicate This Year
Mercury describes how you think, learn, and share information; speaking and writing; documents and contracts; commuting and short trips; and interactions with siblings and neighbors. A Mercury return has a deliberately narrow focus: it does not answer the year’s overall life question. It shows what tends to occupy your mind and how your communication and learning may unfold. As with solar and lunar returns, separate what stays fixed from what varies:
| Position | Across returns | How to read it |
|---|---|---|
| Return Mercury’s sign and degree | Fixed | Your natal thinking style, not a variable for the year |
| Return Mercury’s house in the return chart | Changes with the Ascendant | The area of life most associated with thought and communication this year |
| Return Sun | Stays within about 28 degrees of natal Mercury | A narrow range of variation; not a main signal |
| Return Ascendant and Midheaven | Changes each time | The way you show up in this year’s thinking and communication |
| Return Mercury’s direction | Usually direct; one of multiple returns may be retrograde | A rhythm of moving forward or revisiting and reorganizing |
| Moon, Venus, and Mars | Different each time | Triggers for the year |
A Mercury-focused version of the three-part starting point:
- Which house does return Mercury occupy in the return chart? This shows the area of life that may draw the year’s thinking, learning, and communication. In the 3rd house, everyday conversations and learning may increase; in the 10th, attention may often turn to work and public roles. The return Ascendant’s sign adds the way you show up.
- Is return Mercury direct or retrograde? Direct motion tends to support moving forward and opening new topics; retrograde motion tends to bring review, revision, or a return to an old discussion.
- Look for fast-moving planets close to the return chart’s angles or return Mercury. These are the chart’s most visible triggers for the year.
Before interpreting the chart, write down the structure that applies every year as background. Chen’s natal Mercury is at 17°45′ Virgo, and her natal Sun is at 20°04′ Virgo. In every Mercury return chart, return Mercury is therefore about two degrees from her natal Sun. Her thinking often revolves around self-expression; that is part of her baseline, not a discovery unique to one year. Establish the background first, then consider what changes.
Chen’s Mercury return on September 4, 2026 is one example:
The return Ascendant is at 15°59′ Cancer, return Mars at 15°07′ Cancer is close to it, and return Mercury falls in the 3rd house and is direct. A tentative observation might be: “This year, her thoughts may often turn to everyday learning and communication; she may speak and make decisions quickly and directly.” This is an observation, not a guarantee about learning or signing a contract; decisions about courses or agreements still depend on the actual conditions.
Reading a Venus Return: Relationships, Values, and the Eight-Year Cycle
A Venus return explores what you want and value in relationships this year, where you are willing to spend money and time, and what you find beautiful or enjoyable. The method is the same as for Mercury. Chen’s return Venus always comes back to 14°38′ Libra; this is part of her natal Venus pattern. First look at the house return Venus occupies in the return chart and the sign of the return Ascendant, then at Venus’s direction and its contacts from faster planets.
Venus has one feature Mercury does not: an eight-year cycle. Earth completes eight orbits around the Sun while Venus completes nearly thirteen, bringing the relative positions of the Sun, Earth, and Venus close to a repeat. So every eight years Venus returns to its natal position on nearly the same date and in nearly the same relationship to the Sun. Chen’s Venus returns at eight-year intervals:
| Year | Return date (Taipei) | Return Sun | Return Ascendant | Return Venus falls in |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2010 | August 22 | 28°42′ Leo | 26°46′ Leo | 2nd house |
| 2018 | August 22 | 28°48′ Leo | 12°13′ Virgo | 2nd house |
| 2026 | August 22 | 28°57′ Leo | 7°46′ Libra | 1st house |
| 2034 | August 22 | 29°10′ Leo | 28°37′ Scorpio | 11th house |
| 2042 | August 22 | 29°27′ Leo | 22°04′ Aquarius | 8th house |
In all five charts, Venus is about 45 degrees east of the Sun, an evening star, so the Venus-Sun relationship is nearly the same. What changes is the time of day of the return, which shifts the Ascendant and houses. This makes an eight-year comparison useful: for the 2026 cycle, look back to 2018 and ask what mattered in your relationships, finances, and preferences then, and how you see those things now. This is a way to reflect, not a prediction that the same people or events will return.
In the chart for August 22, 2026, the return Ascendant is at 7°46′ Libra and return Venus falls in the 1st house, about 7 degrees from the Ascendant. How she is seen, how she expresses her preferences, and her appeal are the main settings for this cycle’s relationship and values themes. Self-expression and attraction may come to the foreground; this does not guarantee a romance. How a relationship develops still depends on communication, boundaries, and real-world choices.

In this Venus return chart, return Venus falls in the 1st house.
The 1st house relates to self-image and how you show up, so this cycle you may care more about how you look and be more willing to say what you like.
Return Venus is in Libra, a special signal for this year only, which means romance is especially strong.
So this cycle you will definitely meet the one you are destined for.
Venus comes back to its natal place on about the same date every eight years, so you can compare with the return eight years ago and see what mattered to you in relationships then.
Since Venus looks so good, you should quit your job this cycle and focus on what you enjoy.
Advanced: Overlaying the Natal Chart
With a natal overlay, return Mercury and Venus always fall in their respective natal houses, creating a fixed background: Chen’s return Mercury is always in the natal 4th house, and return Venus in the natal 5th. The variable becomes which natal house the return Ascendant falls in. Her Mercury return on September 4, 2026 has its Ascendant in the natal 2nd house, drawing attention to income and resources. Across the five Venus returns in the eight-year cycle, the Ascendant falls in her natal 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, and 9th houses; in 2026 it shares the natal 5th house with Venus, concentrating themes of romance, creativity, and play.
In the overlay, the return Sun also moves through only a few natal houses: the 3rd, 4th, and 5th in Mercury returns, and the 4th, 5th, and 6th in Venus returns. Keep the houses in the standalone chart and the overlay clearly labeled; do not combine them in one conclusion.
Place Them Under the Year’s Main Theme
Mercury and Venus returns each happen about once a year, but each covers only one area of life. They sit under the solar return as two more specific parts of the annual picture:
| Chart | Timescale | What it answers |
|---|---|---|
| Solar return | One year | The year’s themes and setting |
| Mercury return | About one year, irregular during retrograde loops | How you think, communicate, and learn this year |
| Venus return | About one year, irregular during retrograde loops | What you want in relationships and what you value this year |
| Lunar return | About 27 days | Which monthly cycles may bring the themes into sharper emotional focus |
In Chen’s 2026 solar return, the return Sun falls in the 1st house, and the return Moon and Mercury fall in the 2nd. A tentative annual theme is “self-renewal and personal plans, income and values.” Three weeks earlier, her Venus return placed Venus in the 1st house, echoing the image and preference side of self-renewal. Her Mercury return placed Mercury in the 3rd house, reminding us that everyday learning and communication may also draw her attention; personal plans may begin with listening and asking more questions. The charts also cover different periods: the Venus return remains active until September 26, 2027, the Mercury return until August 27, 2027, and the solar return until around the next birthday.
Four common misreadings to watch for:
- Treating a fixed position as a variable: “Venus is in Libra in this year’s return, so romance must be especially active.” Return Venus always returns to the same sign and degree, describing natal structure; this year’s signal is the house it occupies.
- Treating three returns as three separate years: Multiple returns caused by one retrograde loop belong to one chapter. Observe the whole window.
- Treating a retrograde return as a bad year: A retrograde chart can suggest revisiting and revising. It does not predict failure or decide practical matters such as signing a contract or investing.
- Treating a Venus return as a romance prediction: It describes tendencies in relationships and values; it does not guarantee meeting or losing someone, and it cannot replace communication.
Mercury and Venus returns offer two additional points of reflection during the year: where your mind goes and what your heart is drawn to. What you do with those observations remains up to you, in keeping with Astrology as a Mirror, Not a Verdict.
Next, Mars Returns applies the same method to Mars. It returns about every two years and, like Mercury, can pass its natal degree several times during a retrograde loop. Its themes include action, drive, and conflict.
