Solar Return: A Chart for This Year of Your Life

7 min read

Learning objectives

  • ✦Describe a solar return chart's structure, calculation moment, purpose, and duration
  • ✦Read the return Ascendant, the return houses containing the Sun and planetary concentrations, and planets near the return chart's angles
  • ✦Explain why the return Sun's sign and degree stay fixed while its house in the return chart changes each year

After your birthday, you may wonder, “Where will the focus of this year of my life fall?” A return chart is a map for organizing the themes of the year.

In the previous two lessons, you learned how to calculate a return chart and clarified how it differs from a natal chart and a transit chart. Now let’s answer the most practical question: once the chart is calculated, where should you look first?

A return chart is a complete chart

A solar return chart uses the same planets, signs, and four angles as a natal chart, but its calculation moment and purpose are different. A natal chart describes long-term structure. A return chart is calculated for the moment when the Sun returns to its natal longitude, and describes the themes of that return year alone. Do not read it as a second natal chart.

The return chart has its own Ascendant, Midheaven, and twelve houses. This lesson first reads it as a standalone chart: return planets fall in the return chart’s own houses, and aspects describe connections among planets in that chart. When you open a return chart in astro.how, this is the default view.

Look first at three areas

When you first look at a newly calculated return chart, resist the urge to analyze every planet in detail. In practice, start with these three places, in order:

  1. Return Ascendant: This sets the tone for the year. Its sign hints at how you may meet the world, whether with an assertive, steady, or growth-oriented approach.
  2. The return houses containing the Sun and planetary concentrations: The house containing the return Sun is a frequently cited focus for the year. A house with three or more return planets is also an area likely to receive a strong share of your energy and attention.
  3. Planets close to the return chart’s angles: Planets conjunct the return Ascendant, Midheaven, Descendant, or IC tend to be especially visible. They are often the most prominent actors in the year’s themes.

For example, suppose the return Ascendant is in Sagittarius, the return Sun falls in the 10th house, two other return planets gather there, and return Jupiter is close to the return Midheaven. Three different kinds of signal point toward career and public role. Their agreement gives that theme more weight in your reading, but it does not promise a promotion or success.

Now use these three areas to read Chen Yutong’s return chart:

Return Sun: fixed sign, a different house each year

There is a technical fact about the return Sun that is easy to overlook: it must return to the natal Sun’s exact longitude. Its sign and degree therefore stay fixed. If your natal Sun is at 12° Leo, every year’s return Sun is still at 12° Leo. But the return Ascendant changes each year, rearranging the twelve houses, so the return Sun’s house changes each year. This is one of the most commonly cited annual signals in a solar return.

With a natal Sun at 12° Leo, Earth returns to the position it occupied at birth each year. Seen from Earth, the Sun returns to 12° Leo, so the return Sun's sign and degree are the same every year.Illustration

The return Sun in the 4th house can bring attention to home, living arrangements, and inner foundations. In the 7th, one-to-one relationships may take center stage. In the 11th, communities and future plans may come forward. The houses where other return planets gather, and their aspects within the return chart, add detail. This follows the logic of reading transits through houses: placement indicates the area of life, while aspects describe the quality of interaction.

A quick reference to the life areas associated with each natal house:

House containing the return Sun or a concentration of planets Life area likely to receive energy and attention this year
1st Self-image, personal projects, approach
2nd Income, resources, self-worth, security
3rd Learning, communication, siblings, everyday travel
4th Home, housing, roots, inner grounding
5th Creativity, romance, children, play
6th Daily work, health habits, skills
7th Partners, collaboration, one-to-one relationships
8th Shared resources, intimacy, boundaries, loss and transformation
9th Higher education, distant travel, beliefs, perspective
10th Career, reputation, public role
11th Communities, friends, future plans
12th Rest, retreat, completion, inner reflection

House placement only shows where the spotlight falls. If it falls on the 7th house, that does not mean marriage is certain. It means the relationship area may ask for more of your attention this year.

This is one of Chen Yutong's solar return charts, with at least three return planets in the 8th house. Where might the year’s energy be focused? Which house holds the return Sun, and does it echo that theme? Why does this not mean “a year of bad luck”?

Integration principle: annual signals do not rewrite natal structure

This course takes an integrative approach: return symbols describe what is activated during the year without rewriting the natal structure. Whenever you read a configuration, ask three questions: What sign is it in? Which return house does it fall into? Which planets in the return chart does it contact closely? After one pass, return to the natal chart to see which long-term patterns it touches.

Three questions about return Venus
Solar return chartexampleFictional example · 1992-09-12 22:30 · Taipei / 2041-09-12 19:08 · Taipei
This is one of Chen Yutong’s solar return charts. Ask two follow-up questions about return Venus: which sign is it in, and which house of the return chart is it in?
1. Which sign contains return Venus?
2. Which house of the return chart holds return Venus?
3. How does return Venus relate to natal structure?

Common beginner misunderstandings

  • Treating a return chart as an event forecast: “The 7th house is strong this year, so I will get married.” A theme points to the direction of energy, not a guaranteed event. A highlighted 7th house might show up as an important collaboration, or as a chance to redefine an existing relationship.
  • Mixing two house systems: The standalone chart uses the return chart’s own houses; the overlay reads return planets in natal houses. They can point to different houses, so label which method you are using instead of blending them into one conclusion.
  • Overlooking time accuracy: The Ascendant does not move at a constant speed, and it is sensitive to the recorded time. If your birth time is inaccurate, the calculated return moment, return Ascendant, and complete set of houses may all shift. In that case, be cautious about conclusions based on houses and angles. You can still look at other planetary signs and close aspects.

Advanced: overlaying the natal chart

After reading the standalone chart, you can place the return chart around the natal chart and read it again using natal houses. The three starting points become:

  1. The natal house receiving the return Ascendant: This suggests which natal life area may become a stage for the year.
  2. Return planets in natal houses: In the overlay, the return Sun always falls in the natal house containing the natal Sun, so it is not an annual variable. Differences between years come from the other return planets.
  3. Return planets close to natal angles and the Sun or Moon: Return planets conjunct the natal Ascendant, Midheaven, or luminaries are direct contacts with personal structure this year.
Natal overlay: the return Ascendant falls in Chen Yutong's natal 11th house, placing this year's stage among friends, communities, and future visions.Fictional example · 1992-09-12 22:30 · Taipei / 2037-09-12 19:54 · Taipei

The houses shown in the standalone and overlay readings may differ. Label each source when you combine them. The next lesson, Aspects and Overlays, covers how to prioritize cross-aspects.

An annual invitation, rather than a schedule

To close, keep the course’s central stance in view: a return chart offers an invitation to observe the year, rather than a schedule of events already written for you. For major decisions involving health, finances, work, or relationships, check the facts, seek advice from relevant professionals, and set a date to review the decision. Do not take immediate action or put off necessary care because of an annual configuration. This is consistent with astrology as a mirror rather than a verdict.

In the next lesson, we will take a closer look at the first of the three starting points: the return Ascendant, houses, and annual themes. You will learn to find this year’s main stage from the return Ascendant and houses.
