✦Describe the qualities represented by fire, earth, air, and water
✦Assign the twelve signs to their elements and connect them with polarity
✦Use elemental proportions to read temperament and possible gaps
Why do some people light up every room? Why do others value tangible results and frown at vague dreams? Why can a change in tone affect someone’s feelings all day? Astrology describes these basic differences in temperament through a classification developed over two thousand years ago: four elements, fire, earth, air, and water.
The elements are among astrology’s oldest and most useful filters. The previous lesson’s three modalities describe how a sign moves; elements describe the quality of its energy. Together they give each sign a unique position.
The signs repeat in the order fire, earth, air, water. Each element has three signs, spaced 120 degrees apart, forming a triangle called a triplicity.
Fire: Aries, Leo, Sagittarius. Enthusiasm, action, intuition, vitality. Fire signs express energy outwardly, value meaning and adventure, and tend to act first.
Earth: Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn. Practicality, stability, the senses, endurance. Earth signs value tangible results and help bring things into reality.
Air: Gemini, Libra, Aquarius. Thought, communication, sociability, objectivity. Air signs engage with concepts and relationships, valuing logic and exchanging ideas.
Water: Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces. Feeling, emotion, intuition, empathy. Water signs connect emotionally with the world, with sensitivity, depth, and compassion.
Elements and polarity: another layer
The four elements also form two groups, the two polarities (polarity):
Masculine, outward and active: fire + air. Energy flows outward through expression, action, and engagement.
Feminine, inward and receptive: earth + water. Energy gathers inward through feeling, absorption, and reflection.
Fire and air differ in quality, with enthusiasm in one and thought in the other, yet share an outward direction. Earth and water share an inward direction. Reading elements with polarity helps you recognize the overall flow of someone’s energy.

Read proportions across the chart
Calling yourself fiery because your Sun is in Leo gives an incomplete picture. A fuller reading counts the elemental distribution of all tenplanets. A fire Sun, water Moon, and earth Mercury and Venus combine drive, sensitivity, and practicality.

The Sun is in Leo, Moon in Pisces, and Mercury and Venus in Virgo. Count all ten planets by element to see the available mix of qualities.
Pay particular attention to which elements dominate and which are absent:
A strong concentration makes a quality pronounced, with a possible risk of imbalance. A chart rich in water may have abundant feelings and difficulty stepping back from them.
An absent element suggests deliberate practice rather than an inability. Low fire may need outside encouragement to spark enthusiasm; low earth may struggle to execute ideas; low air may find clear expression difficult despite deep feelings; low water may overlook emotions while working efficiently.

A strong earth emphasis

Many planets occupy earth signs. Describe the pronounced qualities and possible imbalance. Which planets could help bring balance?
Elements describe your available material. Water placements can learn calm analysis, and earth placements can cultivate adventure. Your chart identifies what comes naturally and what may require more effort; it does not confine you to one temperament.
You now have basic filters for reading a chart: modalities for rhythm, elements for quality, alongside planets, signs, and houses. Next comes the chart’s most dynamic layer: the conversations between planets, called aspects.
