✦Describe Mercury's thought and communication, Venus's love and values, and Mars's action and desire
✦Explain why these are personal planets and how they complete the Sun and Moon's picture
✦Use their signs and houses to describe thinking, relationship, and action styles
The Sun supplies a core and the Moon an inner world. Everyday details, how you speak, who attracts you, and what you do when angry, involve three close companions: Mercury, Venus, and Mars. These personal planets turn broad solar and lunar themes into daily life.
Following the Sun and Moon, these planets move much faster than Jupiter and the planets beyond it. Mercury and Venus average roughly a degree per day, like the Sun; Mars averages about a degree every two days. People born in the same year can have different placements, revealing personal detail.
Mercury and Venus also have an astronomical constraint. Their orbits lie inside Earth’s, so they always appear near the Sun: Mercury within about 28 degrees, Venus within about 47 degrees. They therefore often occupy the Sun’s sign or a nearby one:
Viewed from Earth, Venus reaches only forty-some degrees east or west of the Sun: east makes it an evening star after sunset, west a morning star before sunrise. Mercury's smaller orbit keeps it even closerIllustration
Mercury: how you think and speak
Mercury governs mental activity: thinking, learning, receiving information, and expressing it. It describes fast or slow speech, direct or indirect expression, and logical or feeling-based understanding.
Mercury in air (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius): quick thought, conversational interest, clear logic.
Mercury in earth (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn): grounded thinking, practical concerns, little interest in empty talk.
Mercury in fire: fast ideas, forceful speech, infectious enthusiasm.
Mercury in water: intuitive understanding and emotionally colored expression.
Mercury also describes learning preferences. Some learn through discussion; others need quiet time to process alone.

How Mercury in Pisces learns
Natal chartexampleFictional example · 1985-02-19 07:50 · Taipei
Mercury is in Pisces. Describe thinking, speech, and suitable learning methods. Read Mercury's house to add the main area of mental activity.
Venus governs love, preferences, and values. It describes beauty, pleasure, preferred relationship dynamics, and tastes in money and enjoyment.
In love, Venus asks what attracts you and how you want to be loved. Libra Venus seeks graceful, equal reciprocity; Scorpio Venus seeks intensity, devotion, and deep connection. Venus compatibility offers clues to everyday comfort together.
Mars: how you act and pursue
Mars governs action, desire, and drive. It describes pursuit, anger, and where you direct effort. In love, it describes initiative and the expression of sexual desire.
Venus and Mars are often read together: Venus describes what you want; Mars describes how you pursue it. Their connections in synastry are central to attraction, with one person’s Venus contacting another’s Mars suggesting direct chemistry. See Venus and Mars in synastry.

What you want and how you pursue it
Natal chartexampleFictional example · 1988-11-02 02:20 · Taipei
Venus is in Libra and Mars in Aries. Venus describes what you want and Mars how you pursue it. How do these fit together in this person? Do they form an aspect?
You now have five planets: Sun for core identity, Moon for emotion, Mercury for thought, Venus for love, and Mars for action. Together they outline much of everyday personality.
Consider a Capricorn Sun with a Pisces Moon, Sagittarius Mercury, Scorpio Venus, and Aries Mars. The Sun alone suggests a practical, goal-oriented worker. Add the others and you find sensitivity, broad direct speech, devoted love, and fast action. The Sun alone cannot give the whole picture.

Combine five planets into a person
Natal chartexampleFictional example · 1989-01-11 05:15 · Taipei
This chart has a Capricorn Sun, Pisces Moon, and Aries Mars, plus Mercury and Venus. What impression would the Sun alone give? How does adding all five change the picture?
Add each planet’s house to locate its main life area. Sixth-house Mars may direct effort into work and daily tasks; fifth-house Mars into romance, creativity, and play.

Where Mars directs its drive
Natal chartexampleFictional example · 1985-01-02 00:30 · Taipei
Mars is in the fifth house. Where are drive and desire mainly directed? Add Mars's sign to describe how this person pursues those interests.
Personal planets describe natural operating styles. Aries Mars offers quick drive that can become athletic power or impulsive regret, depending on its handling. Pisces Mercury may think through intuition and images, favoring creativity over rote memorization.
Knowing these styles helps you put the right energy in the right place, instead of blaming yourself for being different from someone else.
Next we move outward to the social planets, Jupiter and Saturn, and explore growth, beliefs, responsibility, and boundaries.
