One thing may differ from your expectations: astrology is not here to predict whether you will be promoted tomorrow or find a partner next week. If you arrived expecting a definite forecast, this course may surprise you, in a useful way.
Astrology is closer to a mirror, or a language. It translates planetary positions into descriptions of who you are, how you tend to respond, and which life areas may bring recurring challenges. Learning this language adds a perspective on yourself, others, and relationships. This lesson introduces no complicated techniques. It establishes what astrology is and how astro.how can support your learning.
Astrology is a language, not a verdict on fate
Many people first encounter astrology through newspaper horoscopes or conversations about zodiac signs. These use only a small surface layer: the Sun sign. A full reading considers an entire natal chart: the positions of the Sun, Moon, and planets at your birth, viewed from your birthplace.
Astrology describes tendencies, not outcomes. An aspect might suggest tension and a recurring relationship pattern; it does not say you are destined to divorce. The same energy can support self-awareness and relationship growth, or become an excuse: “I was born this way.” Astrology maps the terrain; you still choose your path.
This is the central difference between astrology and fortune telling:
| Fortune-telling mindset | Astrological mindset | |
|---|---|---|
| Question | “What will happen to me?” | “What are my tendencies? What can I do?” |
| View of the future | The result is fixed | Trends can be explored; choices remain yours |
| Your role | Passive acceptance | Active awareness and participation |
An astrological mindset can be surprisingly practical. Try a sample chart: identify what is wrong with a troubling question, then choose a question about tendencies rather than verdicts.
The four basic elements of a natal chart
However complex a chart looks, it combines four elements. Get an overview now; later lessons unpack each one.
Planets: what energy. The Sun represents core identity, the Moon emotional needs, Mercury thought and communication, Venus love and values, and Mars action and desire. Each planet represents an inner drive.
Signs: how it operates. A planet’s style changes with its sign. Mars in Aries charges directly ahead; Mars in Libra weighs alternatives. The sign gives a planet its tone.
Houses: which life area. The twelve houses divide life into settings such as career, money, relationships, and home. A planet’s energy develops particularly in the area of its house.
Aspects: how energies interact. Angles between planets describe cooperation, tension, or a lack of direct connection. Aspects bring the chart to life as a story.
Put these together into a complete astrological sentence: “Your Venus (energy) is in Gemini (style), in the 7th house (area), square Saturn (interaction).” This is much more specific than “You are a Gemini.” The sample below illustrates all four elements:
For a complete introductory map, read How to Read a Natal Chart. Now try another chart: find Mars and identify energy, style, area, and interaction.
Using the four sections of astro.how
With the learning goal clear, meet the tools. astro.how is a platform for learning to read charts yourself. Four sections at the top of the page will be useful throughout:
- Chart: Enter your birth date, time, and place to calculate and draw a chart. Beside it, an AI conversation offers Beginner Practice and Advanced Practice (you interpret; AI gives feedback), plus Chat (ask AI to explain). You will create your first chart next lesson.
- Articles: A free library covering Sun signs, rising signs, transits, synastry, and more, with one subject explored per article. Use it for inspiration, breadth, and help when stuck.
- Practical courses: Your current section. Courses organize concepts into a sequence, from astronomy and natal charts to synastry and transits. Each lesson includes exercises with sample charts, turning familiarity into practical skill.
- Wiki: A quick-reference encyclopedia of planets, signs, houses, and aspects. Combinations such as Venus in Scorpio or Mars in the 10th house have their own pages for lookup while reading.
Why learn with AI?
Traditional astrology study involves thick books, many symbols, and lengthy searches for combinations such as Mars in the 8th house, sometimes with conflicting explanations. Reading with AI makes that lookup and digestion immediate and conversational. Ask about an unfamiliar configuration in your chart, get a plain-language explanation, and follow links to relevant lessons.
The central principle of this course is that answer quality depends greatly on question quality. Vague questions produce vague answers. First, you will learn to create a chart and recognize its signs, planets, houses, and aspects. Then you will practice asking meaningful astrological questions and judging the reliability of answers. This gives you a method you can use with any chart.
Warm up with Mars: changing its sign changes its tone. Ask AI to describe the Mars below, then ask how it differs from the direct charge of Mars in Aries.
Astrology and AI are tools for seeing more clearly; decisions remain yours. Next, create your own natal chart.
