Planet × Sign × House × Aspect: Combining a Chart's Layers
3 min read
Learning objectives
✦Combine what, how, where, and with whom through the four-layer interpretation pattern
✦Turn one planet's four layers into a complete description of a person
✦Prioritize conflicting information instead of adding disconnected definitions
You know the components: planets are actors, signs their characters, houses settings, and aspects the plot. Many learners recognize each part yet struggle to read them together in a natal chart. This lesson practices combined interpretation.
Looking up definitions separately and listing them produces disconnected fragments. Interpretation combines the four layers into complete, understandable language describing a living person.
The four-layer sentence pattern
Remember this pattern, usable for any planet:
Planet = what energy | Sign = how it is expressed | House = in which life area | Aspect = which other energies it interacts with
A grammatical analogy helps:
The planet is the verb: loving, acting, thinking, setting limits.
The sign is the adjective or adverb: passionately, cautiously, flexibly.
The house is the setting: relationships, career, home, money.
The aspect is the relationship to other characters: which energies cooperate or clash.
Combine these layers in order to move from definitions into storytelling.
Read the planet: Venus describes how I love, what attracts me, and what I value.
Add the sign: Scorpio loves deeply, intensely, and devotedly, seeking full connection rather than superficial flirting.
Add the house: the fifth places this energy in romance, dating, creativity, and play, making romantic involvement particularly expressive.
Connect the aspect: a Mars trine lets affection and desire flow together, aligning attraction and pursuit.
Together: “This person loves deeply and devotedly, shows charm through romance and creativity, and acts readily on attraction.” This gives more life than three separate definitions of Venus, Scorpio, and the fifth house.
Now combine a different planet using the same pattern:

Combine Mars's four layers: read its sign, seventh-house placement, and conjunction with Venus. Identify planet, sign, house, and aspect in order, then form a complete description.
A practical Capricorn Sun with a romantic Pisces Moon, or careful Virgo Mercury square expansive Jupiter, can seem contradictory. Beginners may ask which side is real.
Both are real. People contain contradictions. Practical ambition can coexist with a privately imaginative, feeling-rich life. Interpretation represents the complexity honestly. Recognizing tension is part of learning to read a chart well.

Embrace tension: Aries Sun square Cancer Moon

The Aries Sun squares the Cancer Moon. These layers appear to conflict. Describe the contradiction honestly rather than choosing only one side.
Ten planets, each with sign, house, and aspects, create a great deal of information. Giving everything equal weight produces a fragmented report that contradicts itself.
Prioritize a few prominent features: the tightest aspects, themes repeated by several planets, and angular planets. Let these form the main theme, with other information as supporting detail. The next lesson’s reading workflow turns that judgment into a systematic process.

Find the main theme

At least four planets share one sign. Identify them and explain how that sign's repeated themes lead the chart. Add the tightest aspect as supporting detail.
At first you may fill the sentence pattern slowly. After working through dozens of planets, a phrase such as Venus in Scorpio in the fifth trine Mars can become a fluent story.
Remember that charts describe potential and tendencies. The same configuration can express in constructive or restricted ways depending on awareness and choices.
You have the pieces and a way to combine them. The final lesson organizes everything into a complete reading process so you know where to begin with any unfamiliar chart.
