Mars Returns
13 min read
Learning objectives
- ✦Explain what a Mars return is, its average cycle of about 687 days, and why actual intervals vary from about one year and five months to one year and eleven months
- ✦Distinguish fixed placements in a Mars return chart (the return Mars sign and degree) from changing placements (the return Ascendant, return Mars's house, return Sun, and other planets), and use them to identify the action setting for a cycle
- ✦Explain two effects of retrograde motion on Mars returns: a loop that stops short of natal Mars delays the return, while one that crosses natal Mars creates three returns; state how you interpret multiple returns
The previous lesson on Mercury and Venus Returns covered cycles of about a year that follow the Sun’s pace. Mars is different: it orbits outside Earth’s, taking nearly two years to return to its natal degree, and it can station and move backward along the way.
Two years is a useful scale for applying effort: a project from kickoff to results, or a new exercise routine from starting out to feeling established, can take about that long. This lesson answers three questions: How often does Mars return? How do you read a Mars return chart? And why can retrograde years delay a return or bring three returns in a row?
How Often Does Mars Return? About 687 Days on Average, but Not on a Fixed Schedule
Mars takes about 687 days to orbit the Sun. The moment it returns to the natal Mars longitude as seen from Earth, cast a full chart for the birthplace: this is a Mars return chart. It describes where your drive, initiative, and competitive energy may be directed from this return until the next one.
The 687-day interval is an average. We observe Mars from Earth, which is also moving, and Mars goes retrograde about every 26 months. The time between two returns varies significantly depending on whether an intervening retrograde occurs. Take Chen Yutong, whose natal Mars is at 0°12′ Cancer. From 1994 to 2049, excluding the three-return sequence in 2007–08 discussed below, the intervals between her neighboring Mars returns fall into two patterns:
| Between the two returns | Interval | Example |
|---|---|---|
| One retrograde occurs | 701–711 days, about one year and eleven months | August 11, 2026 → July 21, 2028 |
| No retrograde occurs | 529–539 days, about one year and five months | March 26, 2023 → September 5, 2024 |
Why is the interval irregular? In the solar return lesson, you learned that Earth returns to the same point in its orbit each year, so the return Sun must return to its natal degree. Mars returns are different: about two years later, Earth is roughly 20° short of completing two orbits, while Mars has completed one orbit plus a little more. Neither planet is where it was at birth. What matches is the direction: from Earth, Mars appears at the same zodiacal longitude.
A Mars return does not require either planet to return to its original position. It occurs when the two planets happen to line up at the same viewing angle, so the interval changes every cycle. Longer and shorter cycles alternate, averaging close to 687 days. From Chen’s first return in 1994 to 2026, Mars completes seventeen cycles, averaging about 687 days each. The longer cycles, which include a retrograde, are more common; their dates move about three weeks earlier each time: August 11, 2026; July 21, 2028; July 2, 2030; June 12, 2032. So the idea that Mars returns on the same date every two years does not hold.
A Mars return chart stays active from one return until the next. The interval varies as shown above; it is not exactly two years every time.
What Stays Fixed and What Changes in the Chart
The solar return and lunar return lessons established the same rule: the return planet returns to its natal position, so it is not a variable for that cycle. Mars returns work the same way. The cycle lasts almost two years, so the other planets move differently between charts:
| Position | Across returns | How to read it |
|---|---|---|
| Return Mars’s sign and degree | Fixed | Your natal style of action; an anchor for the cycle |
| House return Mars occupies in the return chart | Changes with the Ascendant | The stage where you invest energy this cycle |
| Return Ascendant and Midheaven | Different each cycle | Your way of taking action this cycle |
| Return Sun | Moves back about 20° in a long cycle and jumps forward in a short one | The cycle’s focus of will and attention |
| Moon, Mercury, and Venus | Different each cycle | Details of the cycle’s emotional and communication patterns |
| Jupiter and Saturn | Each moves a substantial distance between cycles | Aspects to return Mars change; may describe support or friction |
| Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto | Barely move | Generational background; leave these to transits |
The return Sun’s movement deserves a closer look. A long cycle lasts about one year and eleven months, three weeks short of two full years, so the return Sun moves back about 20° each time. A short cycle lasts only about one year and five months, so the return Sun jumps forward by a larger amount. In Chen’s return on March 26, 2023, the Sun was at 4°58′ Aries. At the next return, on September 5, 2024, the Sun was already at 13°04′ Virgo.
Reading a Mars Return: Ascendant, Houses, and Mars’s House
Follow the opening sequence used in the earlier lessons, reading the houses in the return chart itself, then add a Mars-return step of its own: return to natal Mars as an anchor:
- Which house does return Mars occupy in the return chart? This is the setting where energy may be easiest to invest during this cycle. In the 6th house, drive may go toward work routines, daily rhythms, and physical habits; in the 10th, toward career and public roles. The return Ascendant’s sign adds the style of approach.
- Which houses do the return Sun and other planets occupy? The return Sun points to the cycle’s focus of will. If several return planets gather in one house, give that house more weight.
- Use natal Mars as the anchor. Return Mars has the same sign and degree each cycle, reminding you of your baseline style of action. Chen’s natal Mars is in Cancer in the 1st house: she tends to step forward herself and lead with action and physical presence, while first considering the people around her. The house return Mars moves to shows where that drive is directed this cycle.
- Which aspects does return Mars make? Return Mars stays at the same degree, but other return planets occupy different positions in each chart, so its aspects change. An aspect from return Jupiter can suggest support and expansion; an aspect from return Saturn can suggest adjustment, delay, or discipline. These describe the texture of action in this cycle, not a guaranteed outcome.
Some approaches overlay the Mars return chart on the natal chart and read the natal houses; this lesson covers that in the advanced section at the end. Keep the two house systems clearly labeled and do not combine them in one conclusion.
Precision matters too. The return time is about as sensitive to birth time as a lunar return. Natal Mars moves a little over half a degree per day; a one-hour difference in birth time shifts natal Mars by about 0.02°, and the return time shifts with it. For Chen’s 2026 return, the calculated time can differ by about 52 minutes, moving the return Ascendant by more than ten degrees and potentially into another sign. If the birth time is uncertain, give less weight to conclusions about the return Ascendant and houses, and focus more on aspects to return Mars and the return Sun’s sign.
Retrograde Years: A Delayed Return or Three Returns
During a Mars retrograde, it appears to stop, move backward about 15–20 degrees, and then turn direct again. The Planetary Retrograde Motion lesson explains why. Where this backward loop falls determines its effect on the Mars return:
- The loop falls elsewhere: The number of returns does not change; the cycle simply stretches to about one year and eleven months, the longer interval in the first table.
- The loop stops before natal Mars: The return is delayed. On October 30, 2022, Mars reached 25°36′ Gemini, less than 5° from Chen’s natal Mars, then stationed retrograde. It moved back to 8°07′ Gemini by January 13, 2023, when it turned direct, and did not return to 0°12′ Cancer until March 26. Mars stayed in Gemini for seven months; the return was like being called back to regroup just before the starting line.
- The loop crosses natal Mars: Three returns occur. On September 29, 2007, Mars crossed 0°12′ Cancer while direct. It stationed retrograde at 12°27′ Cancer on November 15 and crossed the degree again on December 31. It stationed direct at 24°04′ Gemini on January 31, 2008, then crossed for a third time on March 5. There were three returns in a little over five months.
Mars must cross the exact natal degree for a return to count. On February 9, 2040, Mars stationed direct at 3°01′ Cancer, less than 3° from Chen’s natal Mars, but it did not move back across the degree. That cycle therefore has only one return.
Switch between the three timelines below to see how Mars meets natal Mars: once, once but delayed, and three times.

Why do three returns happen? Look down on 2007–08 from above the ecliptic. Earth travels on the inner orbit and moves faster. It catches up to Mars from behind, passes it, and moves ahead. The line of sight from Earth to Mars therefore sweeps forward, backward, and forward again, aligning three times with 0°12′ Cancer:
How should you read three returns? Astrologers differ, but two common approaches are:
- Let each chart cover its own period: Each chart stays active until the next return. Chen’s first chart lasts about three months, the second about two months, and the third until the next return on August 26, 2009, about a year and a half. astro.how lists each return in sequence.
- Read them as one process: The first pass opens the process, the retrograde pass revisits and revises it, and the final pass settles it. The third chart, active the longest, can serve as the main chart for the cycle.
This lesson recommends observing the returns as one process while respecting each chart’s active period: cast all three, record the return Ascendant and the house of return Mars, and see how the same matter develops from opening to revision to resolution. Whichever method you choose, state it and use it consistently.
Place the Two-Year Action Cycle on a Timeline
The Mars return sits between the solar return and transits in timescale. One Mars cycle can span one or two solar returns. An integrated reading looks like this:
| Chart | Timescale | What it answers |
|---|---|---|
| Natal chart | A lifetime | The basic structure of your drive: Mars’s sign, house, and aspects |
| Solar return | One year | The themes and setting of this year |
| Mars return | About one year and five months to one year and eleven months | Where you direct your energy and how you take action in this cycle |
| Transits | Timing | Which days or weeks deserve closer attention |
For example, if the solar return points to work as a theme for the year and return Mars falls in the 6th house of the return chart, you might mark the overlap as “a period of effort at work.” The day of the Mars return is itself a Mars transit conjunct natal Mars. In a retrograde year, Mars can linger near natal Mars for months; you can observe that interval using the method from Fast-Moving Planet Transits.
Five common misreadings to avoid:
- Treating a Mars return as a prediction of accidents, surgery, or conflict: Traditional astrology also associates Mars with cuts, inflammation, and arguments. But the return chart describes the direction of drive and boundaries; it cannot predict health or legal events. Leave health concerns and treatment decisions to qualified professionals.
- Treating a fixed placement as a new signal: “Return Mars is in Cancer, so these two years will be especially domestic.” Return Mars always returns to the same sign and degree, describing natal structure; this cycle’s signal is the house it occupies.
- Assuming the cycle is exactly 687 days or falls on the same date every two years: Actual intervals run from about one year and five months to one year and eleven months. Longer-cycle dates move about three weeks earlier each time; use an ephemeris or charting tool to calculate them.
- Treating three returns as three separate two-year cycles, or assuming the retrograde chart is an error: All three are real returns, caused by Mars crossing the same degree repeatedly during one retrograde loop.
- Recording only what fits and not counterexamples: Two years is a long time, and you can find a chart placement to match almost anything. Write down a tentative theme at the return and compare what did and did not fit (including counterexamples) at the next one.

Mars turned retrograde near your natal Mars, so it came back to Cancer 0°12′ three times, and all three count as Mars returns.
This time return Mars falls in the 2nd house, so you can first put this cycle's drive into sorting out income, resources, and self-worth.
In the retrograde pass, return Mars stopped at a different degree of Cancer, so your way of acting in the middle months was completely different.
Three Mars returns in a year mean you will definitely get hurt or get into conflicts over the next two years.
It would be safer to postpone your scheduled surgery until after the next Mars return.
You could note what you started, paused, and restarted around these three returns, and compare at the next return.
Advanced: Overlaying the Natal Chart
With a natal overlay, return Mars always falls in the natal Mars house (the natal 1st house for Chen), creating a fixed background. The variable becomes which natal house the return Ascendant falls in, and which natal houses receive the other return planets. In Chen’s August 11, 2026 return, the return Ascendant falls in the natal 12th house; across the three returns of 2007–08, the Ascendant falls in the natal 11th, 10th, and 12th houses in turn.
The standalone chart shows which house return Mars occupies in the return chart; the overlay shows which natal area this cycle’s energy reaches. Both approaches are valid, but label the one you use and do not combine them in a single conclusion.
An Action Map, Not an Event List
A Mars return is an action map for roughly two years, not a list of events. It can help you notice where your drive may be directed and where it may be useful to pause before acting. How you apply your energy, and when you hold back, remains your choice. For major work, financial, and health decisions, check real-world information and seek relevant professional advice, in keeping with Astrology as a Mirror, Not a Verdict.
Next, Jupiter Returns stretches the cycle to about twelve years. We will move from a two-year action cycle into a longer chapter of growth and expansion.
