Mercury sextile Venus: Once you start speaking, the channel connects

4 min read

Before you say a word, the channel waits quietly for you to step on the gas. Mercury sextile Venus leaves a 60-degree connection between Mercury’s words and Venus’s preferences. Once you start, your speech naturally heads toward a version that sounds pleasing.

The core of Mercury sextile Venus: one sentence

A sextile does not stack two planets on top of each other like a conjunction; it builds a shortcut that connects words and preferences. You can usually find a way to say what you mean that feels comfortable to hear, and a way to tell other people about what you like. It is a kind of soft aspect: handy but not automatic. When an opportunity and the right setting appear, you have to speak up for the talent in this placement to get moving.

What each planet wants

Mercury gets the message across: ask clearly and say the whole thing. Venus decides which way of saying it is appealing and which occasions are worth spending those words on. The 60-degree angle lets the two modules work separately while keeping an interface between them. Before you discuss business, you may say one thing the other person likes to hear, loosening the stalemate; for something you are embarrassed to ask for directly, you find a phrase that lets everyone save face. This is lubrication, not dishonesty.

The feel of a soft aspect: three concrete scenes

  1. At a gathering that has gone quiet, you casually add a tactful remark and the conversation picks up again.
  2. When returning an item or asking someone for help, you first give a reason that lets the other person save face, and the matter gets handled.
  3. You draft an invitation message in your head and think you will say it later, so it remains unsent.

The immature and mature versions

The shared risk with soft aspects is leaving them idle. The channel has been built, but you keep thinking, “I’ll say it next time,” and give the opportunity to whoever speaks first. Another way to go astray is to use smooth talk as a master key. Once you are used to saying nice things, your own position can get blurred. The mature version treats 60 degrees as a tool: warm things up before a negotiation, or lead with appreciation when asking a favor. Step on the gas yourself, and gracious words become results you can deliver.

Orb and priority: 60 degrees, within 4 degrees by the natal convention

The natal sextile orb is set at 4 degrees, tighter than the conjunction. Mercury and Venus each move about one or two degrees a day. Check that the planets are within 4 degrees of 60 and that the birth time is not far off for this placement to count. The aspect is also uncommon: the planets need to be on opposite sides of the Sun, each near its greatest elongation, for a 60-degree separation to occur. The closer it is to 60 degrees, the more weight it carries in interpretation.

Quick reference: six aspects between Mercury and Venus

First, the reason: as seen from Earth, Mercury gets at most about 28 degrees from the Sun and Venus about 47 degrees. The two planets cannot be more than about 75 degrees apart, so aspects other than conjunction and sextile are not rare; they are astronomically impossible.

Aspect Angle and natal orb In one sentence
Conjunction 0 degrees, within 7 degrees Words and taste share one version
Opposition 180 degrees Does not occur in a natal chart
Trine 120 degrees Does not occur in a natal chart
Square 90 degrees Does not occur in a natal chart
Sextile (this page) 60 degrees, within 4 degrees Once you start speaking, the channel connects
Quincunx 150 degrees Does not occur in a natal chart

The channel only creates value when you activate it. The idea that “soft aspects are naturally good” is directly examined in Myths about hard aspects. The overview of all six pairings and combinations with other planets is in the planetary aspect-pair index; to practice using sextiles step by step, the aspects course lays out the process.
