Mars quincunx Saturn: hard work and discipline work independently
4 min read
The energy to fight and the set of rules to abide by are on different schedules: When Mars and Saturn form quincunx (also known as quincunx phase), Mars and Saturn are 150 degrees apart. There is no ready-made compatible language between the two rhythms.

Mars and Saturn become the core of quincunx: one sentence version
150 degrees separates an inconsistent angle: there is no support from the specifications where you want to rush, and there is no need for momentum in the areas that can be defended. The trouble is not conflict but misalignment - the harder you work, the more you feel something is out of alignment; when you follow the rules completely, the horse in your heart starts to kick the railing again.
What each planet wants
Mars wants instant action and speed, while Saturn wants cumulative results and discipline. The two demands are separated by five signs on zodiac, and the elements and patterns are not connected. It is like two contracts with the same conditions, but the terms are not consistent. The responsibility of translation is yours: set your own rules for the sprint, and leave an exit for the rules that can be acted upon immediately.
The feeling of minor aspect: three specific scenes
- Halfway through a project that you are passionately invested in, you will find that the existing process is not your way at all, and your enthusiasm and results are stuck together.
- The schedule that has been arranged according to the rules will be completely thrown out when something needs to be dealt with immediately, and it will have to be rearranged again afterwards.
- Others can’t see your stuck point - it’s not that you don’t want to move, or that you don’t dare to move, it’s that the two sets of settings can’t reach the same level.
Immature and mature expressions
The immature version simply gave up on translation: one deliberately broke the rules to prove that he was not restricted, but at the same time he thought he was undisciplined, and the two voices took turns deducting points. The mature version regards misalignment as a difference in specifications - every time it gets stuck, it makes slight adjustments: changing the action to a legal entry point, or making the rules leave more gaps for on-the-spot reactions. After grinding out a few sets of your own combinations, this mismatch will become a combination that no one else has.
Orb and priority: 150 degrees, natal convention within 0 degrees
This 150 degrees is not drawn on the natal chart of astro.how: the orb of quincunx is set as 0 degrees. Each practice is different, and some astrologers use a narrow orb of two or three degrees. To confirm this relationship, check whether the actual degree difference between the two planets falls around 150 degrees. It belongs to the minor aspect in the interpretation order: the main phases and main lines of the whole are read first, and the remaining unspeakable problems are taken over by this group; the quincunx page puts the definitions together with each orb.
Cheat Sheet: Six Aspects of Mars and Saturn
The six distances are arranged according to distance as shown in the table below.
| Aspect | Angle and natal orb | In one sentence |
|---|---|---|
| conjunction | Within 0 degrees, 7 degrees | Temperance lies in action |
| opposition | 180 degrees, within 7 degrees | Attack and defense take turns taking charge |
| trine | 120 degrees, within 6 degrees | Momentum and stamina follow the same path |
| square | 90 degrees, within 6 degrees | Fixed starting speed bumper |
| sextile | 60 degrees, within 4 degrees | Discipline is a capable assistant |
| quincunx (this page) | 150 degrees, not marked | Effort and discipline go hand in hand |
quincunx does not appear in the red line on the chart, but it is often the missing corner when solving the chart: The Myth of Hard Aspect will first give you the good and bad points; the complete list of the six combinations of Mars Saturn is in Aspect Pairing Index, and Aspects Course will take you to practice the entire phase language.
