What Is Your Descendant Sign? The Qualities That Attract You

5 min read

Look back at the people you have dated. If they share a quality, a temperament, or a way of making you feel both safe and hurt, that pattern may be meaningful.

One position in the chart specifically describes this: the Descendant. It does not predict whom you will meet, but describes what tends to attract you. See how to read your Rising sign for the Ascendant, and the Sun, Moon, and Rising for their broader roles.

Opposite the Ascendant lies your relationship pattern

The Descendant, abbreviated DSC, is directly opposite the Ascendant and marks the beginning of the 7th house.

The Ascendant is how you enter a room; the Descendant is how you approach others. One asks, “How do I show up?” The other asks, “What am I looking for in another person?”

In everyday terms, it describes the qualities that catch your attention, rather than the other person themselves. Why do you notice just one person in a group? This placement often offers a clue.

A limit: it describes tendencies, not relationship outcomes. It cannot replace communication, boundaries, or choices. A chart may suggest the direction of attraction without establishing whether two people can build a good life together.

Finding the Descendant: 180 degrees from the Ascendant

The calculation is simple: your Descendant sign is the sign opposite your Rising sign.

On a circular chart, the Ascendant is at the left, around nine o’clock, and the Descendant is at the right, around three o’clock. They are always 180 degrees apart. Once you know your Ascendant, the Descendant follows automatically:

Rising sign Descendant sign
Aries Libra
Taurus Scorpio
Gemini Sagittarius
Cancer Capricorn
Leo Aquarius
Virgo Pisces

The remaining six reverse these pairs: Libra opposite Aries, Scorpio opposite Taurus, and so on.

Because the Descendant is determined by the Ascendant, it also needs an accurate birth time. An uncertain time means an uncertain Descendant. See calculating your Rising sign.

The Descendant in twelve signs: what you seek in others

Descendant What attracts you What to watch
Aries Decisive people willing to lead Being carried along by forcefulness
Taurus Steady people who offer security Staying too long for stability
Gemini Interesting people you can talk to Liveliness without depth
Cancer Warm, caring people Blurred boundaries
Leo Radiant, confident people Fading into the background
Virgo Reliable people who do things well Turning a relationship into a task list
Libra Graceful, considerate people Surface harmony that silences honesty
Scorpio People with depth and intensity Getting drawn into control and tests
Sagittarius Free-spirited people with perspective Commitment remaining unresolved
Capricorn Mature people who can shoulder responsibility A relationship becoming a business project
Aquarius Independent people with unusual ideas Distance persisting within intimacy
Pisces Gentle, accepting people Confusing sympathy with love

The final column is a reminder rather than a warning. Every attraction has a cost; recognizing it gives you room to choose.

Why you are often drawn to what you lack

The answer is built into the geometry: the Descendant is opposite the Ascendant.

The Ascendant describes a familiar toolkit; the Descendant describes a less developed but needed one. Aries Rising is good at charging ahead alone, so Libra on the Descendant may draw them toward people who coordinate and prioritize relationships, qualities they have yet to develop themselves.

This explains a common dilemma: the trait that first attracts you can later become the one you find hardest to tolerate. Capricorn Rising may love the warmth of Cancer on the Descendant, then later experience it as clinginess. The other person may not have changed; approaching an unfamiliar capacity can itself feel uncomfortable.

A mature response is to develop some of that quality yourself, rather than simply change partners. The other person demonstrates another possibility instead of merely filling a gap.

Planets in the 7th house tell you more

The Descendant is only the start of the 7th house. Planets there add more specific information:

  • Venus in the 7th: relationships take priority, with a tendency to yield for harmony.
  • Mars in the 7th: direct engagement brings both sparks and conflict.
  • Saturn in the 7th: cautious or later-developing partnerships that often endure once established.
  • Uranus in the 7th: a need for space and less conventional arrangements.

An empty 7th house is completely normal. It suggests relationships are not the chart’s loudest theme, rather than an absence of partnership. See the 7th house for the full reading, synastry for comparing two charts, and the angles lesson for a systematic approach.

The Descendant is not your destined other half

The advice to “find someone whose sign matches your Descendant” misreads the symbol.

The Descendant describes your relationship pattern, not another person’s Sun sign. It belongs in your chart and concerns your lessons, projections, and attractions. Your partner’s identity or sign has no necessary connection to it.

Many lasting couples have sign combinations that look entirely unremarkable by standard compatibility rules. Communication, daily rhythms, and values determine relationship quality; a chart can suggest themes without doing that work.

The Descendant mirrors your habits in relationships: returning to similar people and getting hurt in familiar places. Recognizing the pattern at least lets you choose whether to repeat it next time.
