Branches of Astrology: Natal, Transits, Synastry, Horary, and Mundane

5 min read

Tell someone you are learning astrology and they may ask, “So you can tell the future?” That question mixes several techniques with different data, rules, and levels of responsibility.

Separating them helps you see what you still need to learn. This is the branching point at stage four of the astrology learning path.

One name, very different tasks

A rough but useful division: astrology may describe a person, describe a period, describe a relationship, answer a question, or describe a collective. Five goals, five kinds of charts, and five rule sets.

Many disputes arise when an astrologer offers a description and the listener hears a judgment. “Is astrology accurate?” is incomplete; ask which branch, which question, and under what conditions.

Natal astrology: who you are

Natal astrology is the common starting point. It concerns structure: enduring psychological configurations, energy distribution, and habitual patterns. Date, time, and place of birth produce a natal chart.

This is often mistaken for a personality test, but it describes configurations rather than categories. Apparent introversion might involve Moon in the twelfth house or Mercury conjunct Saturn, with very different implications. Its boundary is clear: the natal chart describes your starting material, while questions about this year require a timing technique.

Timing techniques: transits, progressions, and returns

Why can the same person seem so different at twenty and thirty-two? Timing techniques address this through three routes.

Technique What it calculates Suitable question
Transit Current planets interacting with the natal chart What is happening around me now?
Progression Symbolically advancing positions after birth Which chapter am I entering internally?
Return A chart for a planet returning to its natal position What is this year’s theme?

See Transits, progressions, and returns compared: transits provide the outer frame, progressions inner readiness, and returns the year’s focus.

Timing techniques look different: the outer ring shows current planets, the inner ring natal placements. Transiting Saturn has entered Aries and squares natal Mars; the links between rings describe the transit.Fictional example · 1992-09-12 22:30 · Taipei / 2026-02-14 20:05 · Taipei

Giving dates is a common boundary violation. Presenting “You will be promoted in March” as certain is a warning sign; see Astrology consultation red flags.

Relationship astrology: synastry and composite charts

People asking about love often think they need a natal reading when they need another type of chart.

Synastry concerns the interaction between two people; a composite concerns the relationship itself. Synastry overlays two natal charts to see where A’s planets contact B’s placements. A composite combines midpoints into a third chart belonging to the relationship. See the Synastry guide and Composite charts explained. These show interaction tendencies, not someone else’s private thoughts, and cannot prove that you will end up together.

Horary astrology: answering one question

Horary typically needs no birth data. It casts a chart for the moment a question takes shape, addressing one specific matter. Its strength is narrow scope, and its rules are especially strict. Because the input is not inherently objective, tradition supplies conditions for deciding when a chart should not be judged. See Horary astrology explained. Astrology dice use related symbolic logic reduced to three variables, useful for practicing questions but unsuitable for major decisions.

Mundane, financial, medical, and pet astrology: specialist branches and limits

Specialist branches share natal symbolism but differ in their subjects and responsibilities. Pet astrology is an accessible example, using birth or adoption time to explore an animal’s temperament and needs. See the Pet astrology lesson.

  • Mundane astrology: charts for countries or event locations describe collective rhythms. Often applied to wars and elections, its purpose is to describe a period’s character rather than predict a winner. See the Mundane lesson.
  • Financial astrology: applies cycles to markets, discussing possible increases in volatility rather than buy or sell signals. Avoid claims presented as investment advice. See the Financial lesson.
  • Medical astrology: traditionally associates signs with body parts. Its modern boundary is clear: no diagnosis, advice to stop medication, or replacement for medical care. See the Medical lesson.

Their shared rule is: the larger the subject and the less precise the data, the less certainty is justified. Moving straight from natal study to national predictions mistakes the most uncertain branch for the easiest.

Comparison: question, branch, and required data

Your question Suitable branch Data needed
What am I like? Natal astrology Birth date, time, and place
What am I experiencing now? Transits, progressions, returns Natal data and current time
What is happening between us? Synastry, composite Both people’s data
What about this specific matter? Horary, astrology dice The moment of asking
What characterizes these years collectively? Mundane astrology An event or regional starting point

Branches have different purposes rather than ranks. A common mistake is using a natal chart for everything, turning every answer into a personality description.

Choose any branch, but keep a sensible order: establish natal basics and a reading workflow, then timing, relationships and questions, and finally specialist branches. They share symbols; unstable building blocks leave you guessing everywhere.

Every branch offers a mirror rather than a verdict. Your task is to recognize which branch a statement belongs to and whether it crosses its boundaries.
