What Do Birth Chart Symbols Mean? A Guide to Every Mark
5 min read
Does your own chart look like an alien instruction manual? A ring of strange marks, colored lines, and tiny numbers can make it hard to know where to begin.
There are fewer symbols than you might think, organized into clear categories. Here we divide them into four groups with memory aids and tables. Returning to your chart afterward should make it much more readable.
A chart is a map, and symbols are its legend
Chart symbols form a legend. Like transit maps using colors for routes and icons for exits, charts identify who is present and which zodiac segment a position belongs to.
The system is international: Mars is ♂ and Leo is ♌ across chart websites. Learn them once and recognize them elsewhere.
There are four groups: planetary symbols, zodiac symbols, aspect symbols, and small annotations for degrees and status. We will examine them in order.
Remembering the ten planetary symbols
Planetary symbols combine three basic elements: circle for spirit, semicircle for soul, and cross for matter. Recognizing these parts helps with memory.
| Planet | Symbol | Memory aid |
|---|---|---|
| Sun | ☉ | A circle with a central point, like the Sun |
| Moon | ☽ | An easily recognized crescent |
| Mercury | ☿ | A circle with horns above and a cross below: the messenger’s helmet |
| Venus | ♀ | Circle above a cross, like a mirror |
| Mars | ♂ | A circle and outward arrow: shield and spear |
| Jupiter | ♃ | Resembles 4, with a semicircle extending above a cross |
| Saturn | ♄ | Resembles 5, with a cross above a semicircle |
| Uranus | ♅ | An H-like shape above a circle, like an antenna |
| Neptune | ♆ | A trident |
| Pluto | ♇ | A combined P and L; another version places a circle inside a semicircle |
Remember pairs: Venus and Mars contrast, as do Jupiter and Saturn, with semicircle above cross versus cross above semicircle. Pairs are easier than isolated memorization.
You may also see nonplanetary points and bodies: ☊ North Node, ☋ South Node, and ⚷ Chiron. Beginners can leave these for later.
Remembering the twelve zodiac symbols
Most zodiac glyphs simplify their symbolic figures. Knowing the image reduces memorization.
| Sign | Symbol | What it depicts |
|---|---|---|
| Aries | ♈ | A ram’s horns |
| Taurus | ♉ | A bull’s head and horns |
| Gemini | ♊ | Roman numeral II, suggesting twins |
| Cancer | ♋ | Two crab claws |
| Leo | ♌ | A lion’s mane and tail |
| Virgo | ♍ | An M with an inward closing stroke |
| Libra | ♎ | Scales, or the Sun above the horizon |
| Scorpio | ♏ | An M with an outward sting |
| Sagittarius | ♐ | An arrow |
| Capricorn | ♑ | A goat’s head and fish tail |
| Aquarius | ♒ | Two ripples of poured water, despite being an air sign |
| Pisces | ♓ | Two fish facing opposite ways, joined by a line |
Virgo ♍ and Scorpio ♏ are easiest to confuse. Both begin with M; Virgo turns inward while Scorpio points outward. The contrast also resembles their symbolic qualities.

Create your chartAspect symbols and colored lines
The connecting lines in the chart center represent aspects, angular relationships between planets. Colors and styles often follow a pattern: reds for tension, blues or greens for ease.
| Aspect | Symbol | Angle | Nature |
|---|---|---|---|
| Conjunction | ☌ | 0 degrees | Two energies combined |
| Opposition | ☍ | 180 degrees | Pulling against each other, requiring balance |
| Trine | △ | 120 degrees | Ease and natural ability |
| Square | □ | 90 degrees | Friction and motivation |
| Sextile | ⚹ | 60 degrees | Opportunity requiring initiative |
| Quincunx | ⚻ | 150 degrees | Adjustment and mismatch |
Red lines do not mean bad outcomes. Squares and oppositions bring tension, yet skills often develop through years of working with that tension. Many red lines can indicate substantial energy available for use.
Degrees, retrograde markers, and small annotations
The small print carries precision and deserves attention.
Degrees. 24°37' places a planet at 24 degrees and 37 minutes within its sign. Degrees establish aspect tightness. Positions near 0 or 29 degrees receive special interpretations; 29 degrees is often called an anaretic or critical degree, suggesting urgency or completion.
Retrograde marker ℞. An ℞, or sometimes R, beside a symbol means the planet was retrograde at birth. This apparent motion results from the relative movement of Earth and the planet, rather than an actual reversal.
Natal retrogrades are often mistaken for broken planetary functions. A more useful reading is energy directed inward. Mercury retrograde may involve more thinking than speaking, reflecting a different rhythm rather than damaged ability.
Other annotations. AC or ASC means Ascendant; DC or DSC, Descendant; MC, Midheaven; and IC, Imum Coeli. Some charts also label cusp degrees around the outside.

Symbols let us write down the sky. What matters is whether their combinations help you notice something about yourself. Continue with Natal chart symbols, wheel, and basic structure to examine the whole framework.
